The West Greene Middle School boys cross country team became the first squad in school history to earn the opportunity to compete at the state level.
The Buffaloes finished in second place on Tuesday at the Class A Upper East Sectional Cross Country Race at Holston Home to clinch a trip to the state meet.
The TMSAA State Cross Country Meet will be held October 2 at Weakley Park in Clarksville.
Elijah Williams led the Buffaloes with an eighth-place finish in a time of 14:08.9. Austin Spradling finished 15th, Ethan Carpenter 16th, Hunter Franklin 22nd, Joe Reams 36th, Trent Franklin 40th, and Dallas Williams 43rd. Every West Greene runner finished in the top half of the 86-runner field.
Rogersville City won the Boys Class A race and Grandview Middle came in third place.
On the girls side seventh grader Autumn Carter came in sixth place out of 57 runners to qualify for the state meet as an individual.
This is Carter’s second trip to the state meet, making her the first athlete in West Greene or Mosheim history to compete at the state level twice.
Greeneville runners Isaac Gibson, Carter Raby, Riley Castro, Mackenzie Castro and Susan Mullholen advanced to the Class AA State Championship as individuals.
