The North Greene girls used a balanced effort and got everybody involved on Thursday night to pick up a 61-18 lead over University High.

The Lady Huskies put four players in double figures with Sonya Wagner, Haley Bailey and Hannah Miller all scoring 12 points while Zoe Sanders put in 10 points.

“We had pretty good balanced scoring,” North Greene coach James Buchanan said. “We felt like we had an advantage inside and both post players were in double figures. Then we got all nine players quality minutes with nobody getting hurt, so overall I’d say it was a good night.”

North Greene started the night by taking a 19-0 lead after one quarter of play, but it did take the Lady Huskies’ offense a few minutes to get warmed up.

Miller came off of the bench to make North Greene’s first field goal with 4:27 left in the opening quarter. Miller was playing in only her second game since November after a wrist injury, and she scored six points in the first period.

“It was good to see Hannah in double figures after she’s been out a long time,” Buchanan said. “She came in a flushed a couple shots to get the lid off the basket. It’s good to get her back on track because she is going to help us a lot on both ends of the floor.”

After Miller broke the ice Sanders hit Wagner cutting into the paint for a lay in. Wagner then pushed the lead to 9-0 when she stole the ball at midcourt and took it the other way for a breakaway layup.

With 1:55 left in the quarter Sanders knocked down a triple from the right corner to make the score 12-0. Sanders hit from the same spot 1:20 later to make it 17-0 before Mercy Buchanan made a pair of free throws to close the quarter.

Four points from Bailey and a trey from Grace Buchanan pushed North Greene’s lead to 26-0 with 5:44 left in the first half.

North Greene’s advantage grew to 33-2 when Miller sank a jumper from the short corner with 3:54 remaining in the period.

Sanders ended the first half by stealing an inbound pass at midcourt and taking it the other way for a layup just before the horn to give North Greene a 41-7 lead at intermission.

Bailey scored a pair of buckets from block and Wagner put back a miss as North Greene started the second half by stretching the lead to 47-7.

Ella Head followed with a three-pointer as North Greene took a 50-12 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter Miller and Bailey each scored four points in the paint, and Head knocked down another three-pointer as the Lady Huskies went on to win by 43 points.
