The West Greene girls started hot on Tuesday night, but once again Chuckey-Doak showed it has a knack for using defense to cool off its opponent.

Chuckey-Doak held the Lady Buffaloes to just 21 points over the final three quarters and used that to pull away to a 46-35 win. With the win Chuckey-Doak improves to 7-3 and surpasses its win total from last season while improving to 2-0 in District 1-2A play.

“A win is a win, no matter how great, no matter how small,” Chuckey-Doak coach Kyle Donahue said. “No matter how hard you have to work, wins always feel great. I’m very proud of our resiliency tonight. We kept fighting and we kept moving forward.”

The Lady Buffaloes started the evening with a three-pointer from Morgan Brown and Kinsley Ellenburg followed it with a bomb from the top of the key on a possession that lasted over a minute for an early 6-2 lead.

Brown and Ellenburg both hit from deep one more time each and West Greene’s lead reached 14-6 with two minutes left in the first quarter.

Faith Yokley got Chuckey-Doak going by draining a jumper from the elbow. Adyson Ripley then hit a pair of midrange jumpers over the final 38 seconds of the period to cut West Greene’s lead to 14-12.

“We knew they were going to come out firing, and that they were going to shoot well on their home court,” Donahue said. “We had to make sure we closed down on shooters. We were a little lacks on that in the first quarter. We had to sure that up and find who was actually killing us. We just had to defend a little bit closer and when the whole defense plays together it’s a lot easier for us to move around.”

To start the second quarter the Lady Knights brought Saniah Atchison off the bench and on the first possession she pulled up and knocked down a triple from the left wing to give Chuckey-Doak a 15-14 lead.

Atchison stretched the lead by driving through the lane for two points and Hayleigh Hensley powered one in to stretch the lead to 19-14.

Maddie Bryant then pulled up for a jumper from the right wing to break West Greene’s 5:25 scoring drought. West Greene’s Abbey Cox tied the game at 19-19 with a three-pointer from corner.

With 20 seconds left in the first half Atchison swiped possession at half court and took it the other way to put Chuckey-Doak in front 21-19 at the half.

Defense got the Lady Knights going in the second half as Taliah Johnson started the side by blocking a shot on one end and taking it the length of the floor for a layup on the other end.

With 5:43 left in the quarter West Greene’s Hailey Ripley sank a three-pointer to close the gap to 25-22, but that was all West Greene could muster in the period.

Chuckey-Doak ended the period on an 8-0 run including a three-pointer at the buzzer by Yokley that pushed the lead to 33-22.

“It was huge to able to hold them to three points in the third quarter,” Donahue said. “We preach defense, and we showed what our capabilities are. I’m pretty proud of this group.”

The lead reached 37-22 when Hayleigh Taylor dropped in a runner from the lane.

Chuckey-Doak’s biggest lead came at 40-24 when Courtnee Jones slipped a pass out of the paint to Atchison on the wing for three points.

One more three-pointer by Brown cut Chuckey-Doak’s lead 42-33 with 1:35 left to play, but Chuckey-Doak took care of business at the foul line to stay in front to the finish.

Atchison led Chuckey-Doak with 13 points while Yokley added 12 points. Brown led West Greene with nine points.
