ALCOA - The West Greene Lady Buffaloes' season came to an end Friday night with a 72-19 loss to the Alcoa Lady Tornadoes in the quarterfinal round of the Region 1-2A Tournament.

“The Buffs went out fighting and gave 100 percent,” said West Greene coach Betsy Shaw.

Alcoa started the scoring early and often, opening the game on a 7-0 run before the Lady Buffaloes hit a couple of big shots of their own. West Greene trailed the Lady Tornadoes 11-6 midway through the first quarter, but Alcoa closed the opening period on a 14-5 run.

After the first quarter, the Lady Buffaloes struggled to find any rhythm on offense, as they were held scoreless in the second quarter. At halftime West Greene trailed 43-11.

A lack of offense continued to plague the Lady Buffaloes into the second half. Alcoa outscored West Greene 18-4 in the third quarter, and 11-4 in the fourth quarter.

With the loss the Lady Buff’s season comes to an end, while the win propels Alcoa into the region semifinals on Monday where it will meet South Greene.

“They’re a great group of student-athletes,” said coach Betsy Shaw of her seniors. “They will be greatly missed next year.”

Madi Brown and Kinsley Ellenburg both scored seven points to lead West Greene.

Karli Haworth led Alcoa with 16 points, Gwen Carroll had 14 and Amelia Pfeiffer 12.
