Just three weeks into the season the Chuckey-Doak girls have equaled their win total from a year ago by taking down Happy Valleyy 43-35 on Saturday to improve to 6-3 on the year.

The first quarter was fast paced but with not much scoring in the beginning. The Lady Knights trailed 10-5 when Hayleigh Taylor knocked down a shot form in front with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Saniah Atchinson soon after drove for two then hit one of two free throws. A bucket by Adyson Ripley followed and the Lady Knights held a one point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 12-11.

The second quarter was just as close as the first quarter as the two teams went back and forth. Tavyn Southerland hit a three from just outside the arc and another just inside the arc, and the Lady Knights enjoyed a five point lead at 22-17 at the 3:37 mark.

Marcida Moore made a nice move inside as did Kadie Bailey to cut into the lead for the Lady Warriors.

Taylor then took an inbounds pass straight to the hoop as the first half neared its end and the Lady Knights had a slim three-point lead at the break, 26-23.

Chuckey-Doak played about as sloppy a third quarter as possible, only scoring two points. But their defense played about as well as it could have, only allowing only four points, and basically keeping the game within reach and actually leading after three quarters 29-27.

Coach Kyle Donahue said, "The defense was the key for us in the game tonight, as long as we play great defense we have shot to beat anybody”.

Faith Yokley came out and set the tone for the fourth quarter with a big three from just left of the key. That was followed by another big three  from Atchinson and the Lady Knights had a little breathing room at 34-29.

Midway through the final quarter the Lady Knights were in no hurry and slowed things down a bit. Atchinson hit both ends of a one-and-one to stretch the lead out to seven at 36-29.

Then Atchinson hit two more free tosses to increase the to 38-29 at the three-minute mark. From there the Lady Knights were on cruise control and went on for a 43-35 win.

Coach Donahue said, “It was a weird game, the feeling was just off, but a win is a win and it’s good to get a conference win. I thought we did well towards the end of the game”.
